Question: What does the term "the law of unintended consequences" mean to you?
I think that "the law of unintended consequences" can be applied to the situation where one does something with a purpose but the result comes in a way the one did not expected. It does not matter whether the result may be good or bad. For example, in order to save starving babies in Africa, one NGO group in other country had a fund-raising campaign and sent dry milk to the babies' mothers. Though the babies became sick and some of them even died because there were no clean water and the mothers had to use filthy water for milk, witch situation was completely opposite from the situation the NGO group had hoped for.
This is a great example, exactly illustrating the concept, but the assignment asks you to do something different. If you reread the assignment, you'll see that it asks you to connect the concept with your own life experience. By doing this, both of us can get a clearer idea of what this concept means to you.
返信削除Actually, it's true as Chris said that its not your own experience, but it's still amazing! Don't mind, that happens to everyone ;]
返信削除Yeah, just like Shun said, dont mind about such a mistake. take a look at my blog, i did the same mistake as you did. Afterall, we are some what alike, arent we? :)
返信削除Anyways, nice example. I really like how you have related this to NGO and Africa. It showed me that you really do care about those poor children starving to death in Africa.
My own life experimental example for the law of unintended consequences is when I went to a high school in the United States with an aim to improve my English ability because back then my future dream was to be an interpreter.
返信削除Before I went to study abroad, I really wanted to get into Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. However, by taking classes such as Psychology and Photography, that were not available in my high school in Japan, I realized that I am interested in many other fields of studies. hen I decided not to have a clear future dream yet and explore further possibilities for my future because I felt like I myself might have narrowed my own future possibilities by having a clear future dream which I had had since when I was 10 years old.
Although I decided to be an exchange student because I though it would help me becoming an interpreter, I came back to Japan with a totally different future vision.
Thanks Chris for the advice!
